Therapeutic lessons are designed to be inclusive and adaptable, allowing many people of different ages and abilities to participate. Generally, it can benefit:

Children, Teens, and Adults With:

  • Physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, stroke recovery, spinal cord injuries, or limb differences.
  • Cognitive or developmental challenges including autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, or learning differences.
  • Emotional and behavioral needs such as anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, ADHD, or other mental health challenges.
  • Sensory processing challenges where movement and horse-human connection help regulate the nervous system.

General Eligibility:

  • Participants usually need to be able to follow basic directions (with adaptations as needed).
  • Riders must be within safe weight limits for horses and tack (varies by program).
  • A physician’s release is often required, especially for individuals with complex medical conditions.

Who May Not Be Eligible:

There are a few contraindications (where conditions may not be safe), such as:

  • Severe osteoporosis or brittle bone disease.
  • Uncontrolled seizures.
  • Certain spinal instabilities or recent surgeries.
  • Severe allergies to horses or hay.
  • Behavioral risks that cannot be safely supported.

  • At-risk youth for confidence and leadership development.
  • Anyone seeking growth in balance, coordination, strength, confidence, and emotional well-being.
