Our History

Sarasota Manatee Association for Riding Therapy (SMART) was established in 1987. They grew over the years to become a pillar in the society for exceptional service to the special needs community as well as being given the distinction of a Premier P.A.T.H. Center. PATH Intl. certifies professionals according to a set of field-tested standards to ensure the highest levels of safety, ethics and effectiveness in the industry. In 2019, Hooves with H.E.A.R.T (Hooves) opened to families that were unable to find programs that put their needs above the rising costs of equine therapy. Hooves established themselves as one of the only non-profits in the area that operated on donations alone. In August of 2024, the new board of SMART asked the Board of Hooves to meet with them to discuss how they both could evolve to meet the needs of the community together. SMART brought to the table an amazing tranquil facility that boasted 23 acres of green paddocks, a sensory paddock and covered arena. Hooves brought a respected approach of providing services with therapy horses and P.A.T.H certified instructors (both CTRI and ESHML) Hooves were facilitators to the Special Olympics of Manatee County Equestrian Program, an established veterans/first responders program, an established sex-trafficking survivors program and program for children dealing with grief. SMART And Hooves, both, had dedicated volunteers who gave unwavering support and time to their programs. On September 1, 2024, they established SMART with HEART. Together they will strive to strengthen their community ties and commitment to the individuals they serve.
